In North Carolina, 1,565,910 people are struggling with hunger – and of them, 4
79,220 are children. Bridging the meal gap cannot be solved unless there is a concerted effort of both nonprofit efforts and government assistance programs.
In a year, we serve up to 1000 individuals throughout various locations in the Charlotte, NC area.
As a charitable organization, we take our role in helping to ‘feed the hungry’ very seriously and are continually exploring ways to care for those with the greatest needs
. These include the following:
Children: Kids who don’t get enough to eat begin life at a serious disadvantage. Hungry children are more likely to be hospitalized and face higher risks of health conditions like anemia and asthma. And as they grow up, children who are hungry are more likely to have problems in school and other social situations. We distribute food to families with children as one of our highest priorities – especially during the summer months when school is not in session and subsidized lunches are not available.
Seniors: Senior citizens are often the ‘hidden hungry.’ Many live alone and face mobility issues that make it difficult to access the nutritious food they need. Others are too proud to ask for help. We work with social service agencies to identify seniors who may need our help and arrange for food to be delivered to them as a supplement to other food distribution programs.
People Living in Distressed Communities: We work with government agencies to identify neighborhoods where people live at or below the poverty line and then establish food distribution points at local community centers and other convenient locations.
The Homeless: On any given night, there are approximately 2,001 people experiencing homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. Their numbers include single mothers with children, veterans, victims of domestic abuse, people who have lost their jobs, young adults – the list is endless. Most of them are hungry. We believe that homelessness is rarely a choice and that those who have lost their homes should be treated with respect and dignity. We identify where we can best feed the homeless and deploy our volunteers to make sure that they have access to free nutritious meals.
